The California Fire Safe Council Board of Directors is sad to announce the passing of former board member Walter “Wally” McCall on June 23, 2014.
Wally joined the CFSC Board in February 2008 with a strong vision of community efforts. His knowledge of non-profit organizations and operations made him a key board member. Wally was a champion of grassroots movements and vehemently supported the work of local Fire Safe Councils. Wally’s presence and wisdom will surely be missed.
CFSC Chairman Pat Kidder recalls the many conversations he had with Wally over the years. “He provided me with counsel filled with wisdom,” Pat remarked. “I appreciate his time as a board member and the conversations we shared after he left the board in 2013.”
As Executive Director of The C.R.E.W. in Ojai, California, Wally brought positive change to at-risk youth by providing them incredible opportunities to learn valuable skills and knowledge. The C.R.E.W. became a well-respected and much loved community organization under Wally’s watch. It continues to provide necessary service to both the youth it employees and the communities it serves.
More than 200 family members and friends attended an informal celebration of Wally’s life. CFSC Executive Director Margaret Grayson attended the outdoor service held at the Steelhead Preserve on the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy and shares, “We learned more about our very interesting, always talkative board member. Wally had a remarkable life with many interests, but his family was always #1.”
Wally is greatly missed by the CFSC board and staff. Thoughts and prayers go out to the McCall family, to The C.R.E.W. and all who remember the gregarious Wally McCall. Wally is survived by his wife, Mary Jane, three daughters, one son and six grandchildren.
