SUMMARY:Partnering with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on the CalVTP to protect wildlife and promote wildfire resilience
DESCRIPTION:Webinar Date: Wednesday\, November 13\nTime: 1 – 3:35 p.m. \nThis webinar is an opportunity for participants to increase their knowledge of how project proponents can both protect wildlife and\, if required (e.g.\, by the CalVTP)\, engage with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) regarding listed wildlife species protection for wildfire resilience and vegetation treatment projects. Showcasing best practices on CalVTP projects from the perspective of project proponent and wildlife agency staff about their coordination process\, outcomes\, and lessons learned. \nLara Rachowicz\, Senior Environmental Project Manager and Senior Ecologist at Ascent Environmental\, will provide an overview of the CalVTP’s strategies for special-status species protection\, maintenance of habitat\, and process for consultation with the federal and state wildlife agencies. Ryan Olah\, Coast Bay Division Supervisor\, Sacramento Fish and Wildlife Office\, USFWS\, will cover the definition of take under the Endangered Species Act\, how to determine if you have listed species in your project area that may be affected\, and who to contact from USFWS to answer questions regarding listed species. Joseph Brandt\, Assistant Division Supervisor\, Ventura Fish & Wildlife Office\, will discuss best practices when engaging with the Service. Allison Fuller\, Senior Wildlife Biologist at Ascent Environmental\, will explore practical strategies for meeting vegetation treatment project objectives; protecting sensitive wildlife\, plants\, and habitats; applying the best available science; and maintaining feasible project implementation standards. Matt Abernathy\, Senior Forest Health and Wildfire Resiliency Program Specialist at the Resource Conservation District of Santa Cruz County\, and Angie Richman\, Forest Health Program Specialist at the Resource Conservation District of Santa Cruz County\, will present on RCD Santa Cruz’s process of USFWS consultation in developing three different CalVTP Project Specific Analyses in recent years. \nLearn more & register here.

This free event seeks to empower our community with the knowledge to make critical decisions in real life wildfire evacuations. During the workshop you will listen to experts speak on the different facets of evacuation and you will have access to several different resources. Our community has long asked for more in depth information regarding wildfire evacuation and we aim to provide just that. \nAt the end of the workshop there will be an evacuation supply giveaway. To earn raffle tickets take a picture of your current go bag or bring it to the event so we can see what you have in stock. There will also be an electronic scanner and USB flash drives on-site so you can digitize your important documents and take them home. DESCRIPTION:The California Fire Safe Council (CFSC) announces the availability of approximately $1\,575\,000 in grant funds to support hazardous fuels reduction\, community wildfire prevention planning\, and education and mitigation activities in California and the Tahoe region of Nevada. Funding for the 23/24 State Fire Capacity (SFC) Grants Program is provided through master grants to CFSC by the Cooperative Fire Program of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS)\, Department of Agriculture\, Pacific Southwest Region. \nGrant applications are available starting February 1\, 2024. Participants will increase their understanding of how CALFIRE used the CalVTP at Vista Del Rio to facilitate vegetation management and fuels reduction. \nParticipants will complete a field treatment tour of the project area\, learning about the different treatment methods used and why they were chosen. Sebastien Cordier\, Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit Environmental Scientist at CAL FIRE\, and Brian Mattos\, Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit Forester at CAL FIRE\, will discuss the need for this project\, how the treatment zones were selected\, and the successes as well as the shortcomings that happened while implementing this project.

SUMMARY:California Wildfire Conference
DESCRIPTION:https://coastal-quest.idloom.events/californiawildfireconference \nCoastal Quest\, in partnership with Ventura County Wildfire Collaborative\, is proud to present the first California Wildfire Conference.  This three-day exchange will bring together a diverse community of wildfire practitioners to focus on understanding\, preventing\, and recovering from wildfires. The conference will be held from October 24-26\, 2023\, in Ventura County at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. \nParticipants are drawn from California\, Western US States\, and globally where wildfire and communities interface.  Attendees include local and national government agencies/leaders\, natural resource managers/landowners\, California Tribes\, community leaders/organizations\, and multi-sectoral collaboratives/councils. \nWe invite Firewise/Firesafe Councils and Collaboratives who are developing wildfire adaptation and mitigation plans and implementing solutions. This event will be open to 200 in-person attendees\, and select sessions will be recorded and shared after the conference.
